Electric power steering diagnosis and repairs.
Allcoast diagnoses and repairs electric power steering systems at its Burleigh Heads workshop. Many newer vehicles use an electric motor instead of a hydraulic pump, so faults can involve sensors, wiring and control modules as well as mechanical parts. Diagnosis comes first.

How electric power steering works
- Electric assistance
- An electric motor mounted on the steering column or the rack provides assistance. There is no pump, belt or steering fluid in a fully electric system.
- Sensors and control
- A torque sensor reads how hard you are turning the wheel, and a control module decides how much help the motor gives. Faults here can cause warning lights or changes in steering feel.
- Electrical supply
- Electric steering relies on healthy battery voltage, charging and wiring. Electrical problems elsewhere in the vehicle can show up as steering faults.
- Diagnosis and repair
- The workshop reads fault information, checks the electrical side and inspects the mechanical parts, then recommends the repair the findings support.
Signs of an electric steering fault
These symptoms can come from several parts of the system. A diagnosis narrows it down.
- A steering warning light on the dash
- Steering that suddenly becomes heavy
- Assistance that cuts in and out
- Steering that pulls or feels different from one side to the other
- Clicking or knocking from the column or rack area
If the steering suddenly becomes heavy, unresponsive or unpredictable, pull over when it is safe, stop driving and call for assistance rather than continuing the trip.
What the workshop can assess
Electric steering diagnosis covers the electrical and mechanical sides together.
- Stored fault information and warning lights
- Battery voltage and charging
- Wiring and connectors to the steering system
- Motor, sensor and control module operation
- Column, rack and front-end mechanical condition
What happens after diagnosis
The right repair depends on what the diagnosis finds and on your vehicle. Some faults are electrical and can be repaired directly; others involve components that need repair, rebuilding or replacement. The workshop will explain the findings and the options before work goes ahead.
Electric power steering: common questions
Something else? Contact the workshop
Is it safe to drive with the steering warning light on?
Electric steering can lose assistance when a fault is detected, which makes the wheel much heavier. If the steering feels heavy or unpredictable, stop when it is safe and call the workshop for advice.
Does electric power steering use fluid?
A fully electric system does not. Some vehicles use electro-hydraulic steering, which has an electric pump and fluid. The workshop can work out which your vehicle has.
Can you work on my make and model?
Include the make, model and year in your booking request and the workshop will confirm when they contact you.
